Vasili III

Vasili III (1479–1533) was Grand Prince of Moscow from 1505, the son of Ivan III and Sophia Palaiologina. He completed the gathering of the Russian lands begun by his father, annexing the remaining semi-independent principalities of Pskov and Ryazan. In 1514 he captured the fortress city of Smolensk from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania after a long struggle. His reign consolidated the centralized authority of Moscow, and he was the father of Ivan IV, who would become the first crowned tsar.
