Krishnadevaraya (reigned 1509-1529) was the third ruler of the Tuluva dynasty and the most celebrated emperor of the Vijayanagara Empire in South India. Under his rule the empire reached its political and cultural height, marked by victories such as the conquest of the Raichur Doab and campaigns into Odisha. A scholar and patron, he fostered Telugu and Kannada literature and himself composed the Telugu poem Amuktamalyada. His capital, Vijayanagara (Hampi), was among the great cities of its age.
