Askia Muhammad I
?–1538 CE · Gao
Askia Muhammad I (Muhammad Ture) came to power in Songhai in 1493 and expanded the empire to its greatest extent across the western Sudan. A devout Muslim, he made a celebrated pilgrimage to Mecca in 1497 and reorganized the empire's administration, taxation, and army. He was a notable patron of Islamic scholarship, supporting the schools and libraries of Timbuktu. Deposed by his sons in 1528, he remains one of the most influential rulers in West African history.
