Pope Bl. Urban II
1035 CE–1099 CE · Châtillon-sur-Marne, Champagne
Odo of Lagery, a French nobleman, monk of Cluny, and cardinal-bishop of Ostia, became Urban II and proved one of the most influential medieval popes. He continued the Gregorian reform while reclaiming Rome from the antipope Clement III. His enduring fame rests on the Council of Clermont in 1095, where his sermon launched the First Crusade, summoning Western knights to aid Eastern Christians and recover Jerusalem. This call unleashed a movement of vast and lasting consequence — religious, political, and tragic, including violence against Jewish communities. Urban died in 1099, days after Jerusalem fell, before news reached him.
