Pope Nicholas II
?–1061 CE · Burgundy/Savoy region
Gerard, bishop of Florence, became Nicholas II in a disputed succession against an aristocratic-backed antipope. His brief reign proved pivotal: the 1059 Lateran synod issued the landmark decree placing papal elections in the hands of the cardinal-bishops, sharply reducing Roman noble and imperial interference — a foundation of the later College of Cardinals. He also forged an alliance with the Normans of southern Italy, recognizing their conquests in exchange for vassalage and military support, reorienting papal politics. These measures, shaped substantially by Hildebrand, advanced the reform program even as they sowed future conflict with the German monarchy.
