Rabbi Simchah ben Shmuel of Vitry (died 1105) was a French Talmudist of Champagne and a direct pupil of Rashi. He is remembered as the compiler of the Machzor Vitry — one of the most important early Ashkenazic compendia of liturgy and law, gathering the order of prayers for the whole year together with the rulings, customs, and responsa of Rashi's school. Preserving a wealth of early French-Jewish practice, it became a foundational source for the study of the siddur and of medieval Ashkenazic custom.
