Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was a Russian composer, teacher, and naval officer, a leading member of the group of composers known as The Five. After training at the Naval Cadet Corps in Saint Petersburg and a period of sea service, he turned fully to music, becoming professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1871. His works include the operas The Snow Maiden, Sadko, and The Golden Cockerel, and the orchestral suites Scheherazade and Capriccio Espagnol. He was noted for orchestration and completed and edited works by fellow composers, including Mussorgsky and Borodin. He wrote an influential treatise on orchestration and a memoir, and taught many later Russian composers.
