Abdulhamid II
1842 CE–1918 CE · Constantinople
Abdulhamid II was an Ottoman ruler who promulgated the empire's first constitution in 1876 but suspended it and the parliament in 1878, thereafter ruling autocratically for three decades. His reign was marked by the Hamidian massacres of Armenians in the mid-1890s, in which very large numbers of people were killed. Following the Young Turk Revolution of 1908 the constitution was restored, and he was deposed in 1909. He died in 1918.
