Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter, known as the Sfat Emet ("Language of Truth"), was the second Rebbe of Ger (Gora Kalwaria) in Poland, leading the dynasty from 1870 until his death in 1905. He was the grandson and successor of Rabbi Yitzhak Meir Alter, the founder of the Gerrer Hasidic movement. The Sfat Emet became renowned for his profound mystical interpretations of Torah and Talmud, blending Hasidic spirituality with rigorous intellectual analysis. He authored the Sfat Emet, a multi-volume Torah commentary that synthesized kabbalistic thought with ethical instruction, and established Ger as one of Eastern Europe's most influential Hasidic centers. His teachings emphasized internal spiritual service and the elevation of everyday acts to holiness. He was widely respected across the Jewish world and authored responsa on halakhic questions. The Sfat Emet died in Warsaw in 1905, leaving behind a rich legacy of writings that continue to be studied and celebrated in Jewish circles.
