Paul Gauguin

Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist. Born in Paris in 1848, he spent early childhood in Lima, Peru, and worked as a Paris stockbroker before turning fully to art in the 1880s. He became a central figure of the Pont-Aven school in Brittany, developing a flat, boldly colored, symbolic manner. In 1888 he shared a studio with Vincent van Gogh in Arles. Seeking subjects outside industrial Europe, he settled in Tahiti and later the Marquesas Islands, where much of his best-known work was made. He died at Atuona, Hiva Oa, in 1903.
