Pope Pius IV
1499 CE–1565 CE · Milan
Born Giovanni Angelo Medici in Milan—of a family unrelated to the Florentine Medici—he trained in law and rose as a curial administrator and diplomat. Elected after the divisive Paul IV, Pius IV proved a moderate, pragmatic statesman. His central achievement was reconvening and successfully concluding the Council of Trent in 1563, whose decrees shaped Catholic doctrine, discipline, and worship for centuries. He promulgated the Tridentine Profession of Faith and oversaw a revised Index. Aided by his able nephew, the future St. Charles Borromeo, he restored stability to Rome and advanced building projects. He is generally regarded as the pope who brought the Counter-Reformation's defining council to fruition.
