Tangáxoan II (Tzintzicha Tangaxoan)

Tangáxoan II (Tzintzicha Tangaxoan) was the last independent cazonci of the Purépecha empire, succeeding to the throne about 1520 amid the Spanish conquest. He submitted peacefully to Hernán Cortés and was baptized, ruling on as a nominal vassal. In 1530, however, the conquistador Nuño de Guzmán accused him of rebellion and withholding tribute and had him put to death, an act that ended the independent Tarascan state and its royal line.
