Pope Marcellus II
1501 CE–1555 CE · Macerata
Born Marcello Cervini at Montepulciano in Tuscany, he was an accomplished humanist scholar, astronomer, and librarian of the Vatican before his elevation. As a cardinal he served as one of the presiding legates at the Council of Trent and was known for personal integrity and serious commitment to Church reform. Elected in April 1555, he kept his baptismal name—an unusual choice—and signaled an austere, reforming agenda, beginning curial economies and discouraging nepotism. He reigned only about three weeks before dying suddenly, cutting short hopes for vigorous reform. His memory endures partly through Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli, traditionally associated with him.
