1079–1153 CE

Gampopa (1079–1153 CE) was the disciple of Milarepa who gave the Kagyu school its institutional and doctrinal shape. A trained physician before he took monastic vows, he fused the monastic 'stages of the path' inheritance of the Kadam tradition with the yogic Mahāmudrā transmission he received from Milarepa, and his 'Jewel Ornament of Liberation' became a standard handbook. His disciples founded the several Kagyu sub-lineages. He is a well-attested historical figure.

About Nyal (Lhokha)

Nyal is a district of southern Tibet, in the Lhokha (Lhoka) region. It was the birthplace, in 1079, of Gampopa (Dakpo Lharjé), the physician-monk who became Milarepa's foremost disciple, unified the Kadam and Mahāmudrā streams, and founded the Dakpo Kagyu tradition.
