Emperor Huizong of Song

Emperor Huizong of Song (Zhao Ji, 1082-1135) was the eighth emperor of the Northern Song dynasty, reigning from 1100 to 1126. A gifted painter, calligrapher, and patron of the arts who developed the distinctive "Slender Gold" calligraphic style, he devoted great attention to cultural pursuits while state finances and defenses deteriorated. In 1126 the Jurchen-led Jin dynasty invaded and captured the Song capital; Huizong, who had abdicated in favor of his son, was taken prisoner and died in captivity in 1135, an event marking the fall of the Northern Song.
