Mstislav I of Kiev (Mstislav the Great)

Mstislav I of Kiev, known as Mstislav the Great (1076–1132), was the eldest son of Vladimir Monomakh and Grand Prince of Kiev from 1125. He continued his father's efforts to maintain the unity of the Rus lands and campaigned against neighboring peoples including the Cumans and the Baltic tribes. He is generally regarded as the last grand prince to hold a unified Kievan Rus together under central authority. After his death in 1132 the state fragmented decisively into rival principalities, and Kiev's political primacy went into lasting decline.
