Jomo Kenyatta

Jomo Kenyatta (c. 1894–1978) was a Kenyan nationalist leader who became the country's first prime minister in 1963 and its first president in 1964. A prominent figure in the independence movement, he was imprisoned by the British colonial authorities during the Mau Mau uprising of the 1950s. As president he promoted national reconciliation, a market-oriented economy, and stability, while his government was also criticized for concentrating power. He held office until his death in 1978.
