Edward VIII

Edward VIII was King of the United Kingdom and Emperor of India from January 1936 until his abdication in December of that year, one of the shortest reigns in British history. He gave up the throne in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée, whose marriage to the king the government and church opposed. After abdicating he was given the title Duke of Windsor and lived largely abroad until his death in 1972. He was succeeded by his brother, George VI.
