Sukarno

1901 CE1970 CE · Jakarta

Sukarno (1901–1970) was a leader of Indonesia's independence movement and the country's first president. He proclaimed Indonesian independence from Dutch colonial rule in 1945 and led the new republic through the subsequent struggle for international recognition. As president he articulated the state ideology of Pancasila and later governed through a system he called Guided Democracy. He was gradually stripped of power following the political upheaval of 1965–66 and was succeeded by Suharto.
