Dmitri Shostakovich

Dmitri Shostakovich was a Russian composer and pianist who worked throughout the Soviet period. Trained at the Petrograd Conservatory, he came to prominence with his First Symphony in the 1920s and went on to write fifteen symphonies, fifteen string quartets, concertos, film scores, and the opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. His relationship with Soviet authorities alternated between official censure—notably in 1936 and 1948—and public honor. His Seventh Symphony, composed partly during the siege of Leningrad, became internationally known during the Second World War. He spent his final decades in Moscow and remains among the most performed twentieth-century composers.
