Pablo Neruda was the pen name of Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto, a Chilean poet and diplomat. He published widely across genres, from the early love lyrics of Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada to the surreal Residencia en la tierra and the epic Canto general. He served as Chilean consul in cities across Asia, Spain, and Latin America, was elected to the Senate in 1945 as a Communist Party candidate for the northern provinces of Antofagasta and Tarapacá, and — after the party was outlawed in 1949 — went into hiding and then exile, returning to Chile in 1952. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1971. He died in Santiago in September 1973, days after the military coup.
