Jorge Luis Borges

Jorge Luis Borges was an Argentine writer of short stories, poetry, and essays, and a central figure of twentieth-century world literature. Educated partly in Europe, he returned to Buenos Aires in 1921 and helped introduce avant-garde currents to Argentine letters. His compact, philosophically dense fictions — collected in works such as Ficciones and El Aleph — explore labyrinths, infinity, mirrors, memory, and the nature of time and identity. Progressive hereditary blindness led him to compose by dictation from the 1950s. He directed the National Library of Argentina and taught English literature. He died in Geneva in 1986.
