Francisco Franco

Francisco Franco was a Spanish general who led the Nationalist forces to victory in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 and ruled Spain as an authoritarian dictator from 1939 until his death in 1975. Coming to power after a military uprising against the Republic and a war in which hundreds of thousands died, he established a repressive one-party state that suppressed political opposition and regional autonomy. Though sympathetic to the Axis powers, he kept Spain formally out of the Second World War. In his later years he arranged for the restoration of the monarchy under Juan Carlos I, who succeeded him on his death in 1975.
