Lobengula
?–1894 CE · Bulawayo
Lobengula (c. 1836–1894) was the second and last king of the Ndebele (Matabele) kingdom of Matabeleland, in present-day Zimbabwe, reigning from 1870. He sought to manage relations with European powers through concessions, including an agreement that Cecil Rhodes's British South Africa Company used to justify occupation of the region. War broke out in 1893, and after military defeat he abandoned and burned his capital, Bulawayo. He fled northward and is believed to have died in early 1894, after which his kingdom fell under Company control.
