James Monroe
1758 CE–1831 CE · Washington, D.C.
James Monroe was the 5th President, serving from 1817 to 1825 as a Democratic-Republican. A veteran of the Revolution who had served as Secretary of State, he presided over the 'Era of Good Feelings.' His 1823 Monroe Doctrine declared U.S. opposition to further European colonization in the Americas, and his term saw the Missouri Compromise of 1820.
