Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd President, serving from 1801 to 1809 as a Democratic-Republican. The principal author of the Declaration of Independence, he had served as the first Secretary of State and as Vice President. As President he completed the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, doubling the nation's territory, and dispatched the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
