Mehmed II the Conqueror

Mehmed II (1432–1481), called 'the Conqueror,' was the Ottoman sultan whose capture of Constantinople in 1453 brought the thousand-year Byzantine Empire to an end. He made the city his imperial capital and set about rebuilding it as the seat of Ottoman power. Over his reign he extended Ottoman rule across much of the Balkans and Anatolia and issued law codes to organize the growing state. He was also a noted patron of scholars and artists from both the Islamic world and Renaissance Europe.
