Sejo of Joseon

Sejo of Joseon (1417-1468) was the seventh king of Korea's Joseon dynasty, reigning from 1455 to 1468. A son of Sejong the Great, he seized the throne from his young nephew, King Danjong, whom he later had put to death along with officials who opposed the usurpation. Despite the contested manner of his accession, he is credited with strengthening royal authority and the central government, reorganizing the military and provincial administration, and initiating the compilation of the Gyeongguk daejeon, the dynasty's foundational legal code.
