Sandro Botticelli

c. 1445 CEc. 1510 CE · Painter · Florence

Sandro Botticelli, born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi, was a Florentine painter of the Early Renaissance. The son of a tanner, he trained under Fra Filippo Lippi and developed a linear, graceful style. Working largely under Medici patronage, he produced mythological and religious works including Primavera and The Birth of Venus, together with numerous Madonnas, altarpieces, and drawings for Dante's Divine Comedy. In 1481–82 he traveled to Rome to paint frescoes on the walls of the Sistine Chapel, his single documented journey from Florence. His later years brought fewer commissions and greater seclusion. He died in Florence in 1510 and was buried in the church of Ognissanti.
