Isabella I of Castile
1451 CE–1504 CE · Toledo (Castile)
Isabella I became queen of Castile in 1474, and her marriage to Ferdinand II of Aragon joined the crowns that formed the basis of modern Spain. In 1492 her forces completed the Reconquista with the conquest of Granada, the last Muslim kingdom in Iberia; in the same year she and Ferdinand issued the Alhambra Decree expelling the Jews who would not convert from their kingdoms, and they sponsored Christopher Columbus's first voyage across the Atlantic. The two monarchs had also established the Spanish Inquisition in 1478. She died in 1504.
