Qaitbay
1416 CE–1496 CE · Cairo
Al-Ashraf Qaitbay (c. 1416-1496) was a Burji Mamluk sultan of Egypt who reigned from 1468 to 1496, one of the longest reigns of the dynasty. A former slave-soldier, he stabilized the sultanate through a difficult period of financial strain and external pressure, including conflict with the Ottomans. He was a major patron of architecture, and numerous mosques, fountains, and other buildings bearing his name survive in Cairo and beyond. He died in 1496.
