John Cabot

c. 1450 CEc. 1498 CE · Explorer · Gaeta

John Cabot was an Italian navigator who led an English expedition across the North Atlantic. Born around 1450, likely in Gaeta though Genoa is also proposed, he became a citizen of Venice in 1476 and worked on maritime and engineering projects in the Mediterranean and Spain. Seeking a western sea route to Asia, he secured letters patent from Henry VII of England and sailed from Bristol aboard the Matthew, reaching the coast of North America on 24 June 1497 and claiming land for the English crown. He mounted a larger expedition in 1498; its fate, and his own, are not securely documented.
