Qansuh al-Ghuri
1441 CE–1516 CE · Cairo
Qansuh al-Ghuri (c. 1441-1516) was one of the last sultans of the Mamluk Sultanate, reigning from 1501 to 1516. He worked to strengthen Egypt's defenses and finances in the face of Portuguese naval expansion in the Red Sea and the rising power of the Ottoman Empire. He was killed at the Battle of Marj Dabiq in 1516, where the Ottoman sultan Selim I defeated the Mamluk army in Syria. His death cleared the way for the Ottoman conquest of Egypt the following year.
