Sunni Ali
?–1492 CE · Gao
Sunni Ali reigned over the Songhai Empire from 1464 until 1492 and transformed it into the dominant power of the western Sudan. Through a series of campaigns he took Timbuktu and Djenné and secured control of the Niger River trade routes formerly held by Mali. He built a river fleet and reorganized the administration of his growing realm. His conquests laid the territorial foundation for Songhai's later expansion under the Askia dynasty.
