Nader Shah
1688 CE–1747 CE · Mashhad
Nader Shah (1688–1747) was a military commander of humble origin who rose to expel the Afghan occupiers of Iran and restore the country after the Safavid collapse. In 1736 he had himself crowned shah, founding the Afsharid dynasty. His campaigns reached deep into India, culminating in the sack of Delhi in 1739, from which he carried off vast treasure including the Peacock Throne. Increasingly harsh in his final years, he was assassinated in 1747.
