Mahmud I
1696 CE–1754 CE · Constantinople
Mahmud I became Ottoman ruler in 1730 after the Patrona Halil revolt that deposed Ahmed III. His reign secured favorable terms in the wars against Austria and Russia, confirmed by the Treaty of Belgrade in 1739, which recovered territory including the city of Belgrade. He supported limited military modernization along European lines. He died in 1754.
