George Frideric Handel

George Frideric Handel was a German-born composer of the Baroque era who spent most of his career in England. Trained in Halle and Hamburg, he worked in Italy, then served the Elector of Hanover before settling in London in 1712. He composed operas in the Italian style, later turning to English oratorio, and wrote extensively for orchestra, keyboard and voice. Among his best-known works are the oratorio Messiah, the Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks, and the coronation anthem Zadok the Priest. He was naturalized as a British subject in 1727. Handel died in London in 1759 and is buried in Westminster Abbey.
