Elizabeth (Elizabeth Petrovna)

Elizabeth Petrovna (1709–1762) was Empress of Russia from 1741, a daughter of Peter the Great who came to power by overthrowing the infant emperor Ivan VI in a palace coup. Her reign is remembered for its patronage of the arts and learning, including the founding of the University of Moscow and the Imperial Academy of Arts, and for the lavish Baroque architecture of her court. In foreign affairs Russia took part in the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War, in which Russian armies won victories against Prussia. She died in 1762 without children and was succeeded by her nephew Peter III.
