Osei Tutu
?–1717 CE · Kumasi
Osei Tutu is remembered as the founder of the Asante Empire, which he built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries by uniting the Akan states of what is now central Ghana. After leading the coalition that defeated the rival kingdom of Denkyira, he was recognized as Asantehene, ruling from the capital he established at Kumasi. Tradition credits him and his adviser Okomfo Anokye with the Golden Stool, the sacred symbol of Asante unity and kingship. His death is dated to about 1717.
