Anna (Anna Ioannovna)
1693 CE–1740 CE · St. Petersburg
Anna Ioannovna (1693–1740) was Empress of Russia from 1730, a niece of Peter the Great who had been Duchess of Courland before her accession. She was invited to the throne by the Supreme Privy Council on conditions meant to limit her power, but on arriving she tore up those conditions and restored full autocratic rule. Her reign is often associated with the strong influence of her favorite Ernst Johann Biron and a court dominated by Baltic German advisers. She died in 1740, naming her infant grand-nephew Ivan VI as her successor.
