Taejong of Joseon (Yi Bang-won, 1367-1422) was the third king of Korea's Joseon dynasty, reigning from 1400 to 1418. A son of the dynasty's founder, he had played a decisive role in its establishment and seized power after violent struggles over the succession among his brothers. As king he strengthened royal authority at the expense of the aristocracy and Buddhist establishment, reformed taxation and the military, and introduced administrative measures such as the household registration system; he abdicated in 1418 in favor of his son, who became Sejong the Great.
