Barquq

Al-Zahir Barquq (c. 1336-1399) was the first sultan of the Circassian, or Burji, line of the Mamluk Sultanate, seizing power in Egypt in 1382. A former slave-soldier of Circassian origin, he was briefly deposed in 1389 before regaining the throne in 1390 and ruling until his death. His reign saw the beginnings of the pressure from Timur (Tamerlane) in the East that would trouble his successors. He died in 1399 and was succeeded by his son.
