Sejong the Great

Sejong the Great was the fourth monarch of the Joseon dynasty, reigning from 1418 to 1450 in what is remembered as a golden age of Korean civilization. His most enduring achievement was the creation of Hangul, the Korean alphabet, promulgated in 1443 and published in 1446 as the Hunminjeongeum, designed to make literacy accessible to ordinary people. Through his Hall of Worthies he sponsored advances in astronomy, medicine, agriculture, printing, music, and law.
