Taejo of Joseon (Yi Seong-gye)

Taejo of Joseon, born Yi Seong-gye, was a prominent Goryeo general who, ordered to invade Ming China, instead turned his army back at Wihwa Island and seized power. In 1392 he deposed the Goryeo king and founded the Joseon dynasty, which would rule Korea for five centuries. He moved the capital to Hanyang (modern Seoul) and adopted Neo-Confucianism as the guiding ideology of the state, though he abdicated in 1398 amid strife over the succession.
