Bayezid I
1360 CE–1403 CE · Edirne
Bayezid I, known as 'the Thunderbolt' (Yildirim), succeeded his father Murad I at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. He annexed the remaining independent Turkish beyliks of Anatolia and defeated a large European crusading army at Nicopolis in 1396. In 1402 he was defeated and captured by Timur at the Battle of Ankara; he died in captivity in 1403, and his defeat plunged the empire into a decade of civil war known as the Ottoman Interregnum.
