Timur (Tamerlane)
1336 CE–1405 CE · Kesh / Shahrisabz (Uzbekistan)
Timur (1336–1405), known in the West as Tamerlane, was a Turco-Mongol conqueror and the founder of the Timurid dynasty, with his capital at Samarkand. Rising to power in Transoxiana from about 1370, he led far-reaching campaigns across Persia, into northern India as far as Delhi in 1398, and into Anatolia, where he defeated the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I at Ankara in 1402. He enriched Samarkand as a center of art and architecture, drawing craftsmen from across his conquests. He died in 1405 while setting out toward China.
