Pope Innocent VII
1339 CE–1406 CE · Sulmo (Sulmona)
Born Cosimo de' Migliorati in Sulmona, Innocent VII was a canon and civil lawyer who taught law and served as a papal diplomat and tax collector in England before rising in the Curia. Elected as the Roman-line pope during the Western Schism, he had sworn to seek its end but made little progress, distracted by violent unrest in Rome that briefly drove him from the city after his nephew killed civic leaders. He planned to revive the University of Rome and encouraged humanist learning, employing scholars in the Curia. His short, troubled pontificate left the schism unresolved at his death.
