Gajah Mada

Gajah Mada (died c. 1364) was the mahapatih, or chief minister, of the Majapahit Empire in Java during the fourteenth century. He is traditionally associated with the Palapa oath, a vow to unify the archipelago under Majapahit authority, and under his direction the empire extended its influence across much of what is now Indonesia and neighboring regions. His career, described in sources such as the Nagarakretagama and the Pararaton, marked the height of Majapahit power. He is invoked in modern Indonesia as a symbol of national unity.
