Murad I
1326 CE–1389 CE · Edirne
Murad I was the third Ottoman ruler (reigned 1362–1389), under whom the state grew into a major power spanning Anatolia and the Balkans. He captured Adrianople (Edirne), which became an Ottoman capital, and defeated Balkan coalitions to extend his control over much of southeastern Europe. He is credited with developing central Ottoman institutions, including a standing army. He was killed at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389, a victory over a Serbian-led coalition.
