Muhammad bin Tughluq

Muhammad bin Tughluq was a learned but controversial sultan of the Tughlaq dynasty (reigned 1325–1351), remembered for ambitious policies that often ended in failure. His transfer of the capital from Delhi to Daulatabad in the Deccan, begun in 1327, involved the forced relocation of much of Delhi's population, causing great hardship and many deaths before it was abandoned; his introduction of token bronze currency likewise collapsed amid widespread counterfeiting. His reign also saw heavy taxation in the Doab region during a severe famine and numerous revolts that began to fragment the sultanate. He died in 1351 near Thatta in Sindh.
